By "early" I mean the previously little documented period of 1788-1830, prior to which virtually nothing was known of Africa's interior probably because almost all earlier travellers perished from thirst, starvation, disease, and hostile natives - most dangerous of all were the dreaded "Moors", whose self-proclaimed desert hospitality was invariably suspended whenever helpless and starving white explorers sought their compassion. A lot to say about this book. Just as it takes someone with a kind and caring heart to be an excellent Dom or Master. This book is a good bed time story. A hard to classify genre, it reminded me in turns of the best of well-researched literary nonfiction (think Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot) mixed with a little self-deprecating narrator-turned-character in the vein of A. There's so much useful information here and Mr Meert managed to package it in a way that is so easy to understand. His first novel, however, eluded me for some time; it was out of print for a while and then I forgot about it. They also call themselves “Ourobourans” and “Kalichakrans” and have learned to pass information both to the past and to the future.
